How Maasai Mara safaris differ
Most visitors choose between three formats. In a shared trip, you join a group in one vehicle. In a private trip, a vehicle and guide are yours alone. In a fly-in package, you fly from Nairobi to an airstrip in the Mara and a camp vehicle meets you. The animals are the same. What changes is the cost, the flexibility and how much time you spend travelling.
The price you see is rarely the full price. Park fees, conservancy fees and community fees are often charged on top of the nightly rate. Before you compare two quotes, write down the number of nights, the number of park days charged and the unit of each price: per person, per night, per trip or per vehicle.

The formats compared
What each one usually involves.
| Format | How you travel | Drives | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared safari | Road or flight, shared vehicle | Group drives at set times | Group size and who chooses the route |
| Private safari | Road or flight, vehicle and guide only for you | Your own pace | The vehicle surcharge and the number of park days |
| Fly-in package | Domestic flight, then a camp transfer | At least 2 drives a day in one airline's packages | Baggage limit of 15 kg in a soft bag |
| Conservancy stay | Usually a flight to an airstrip | Camp vehicles, sometimes guided walks | A nightly conservancy fee on top of the rate |
The two-drive figure describes one airline's package model, not a promise for every fly-in trip. The vehicle prices are one camp's 2026 supplement, not a full private safari from Nairobi.

What to settle before you book
Six questions that decide how the safari goes.
Shared or exclusive vehicle
At some camps, shared drives are part of the stay and an exclusive vehicle is a separate charge. At one camp it was $385 or $512 per vehicle and day in 2026, depending on the season, for up to 6 guests.
Park fees in the quote
Full board does not include entry. The camp rate sheets list park fees or community fees separately. Ask for the number of park days charged. Park fees โ
Road or air
A road transfer from Nairobi takes hours, and an airstrip transfer takes less. A flight does not replace the transfer between airstrip and camp. From Nairobi โ
Reserve or conservancy
Conservancy camps charge a nightly fee. At one camp in Naboisho it was $130 per adult and night, $65 per child and $5 per person for a reserve fund in 2026. Conservancies โ
Walking and night drives
Guided bush walks and night drives are offered at some conservancy camps. Rules differ between areas, so ask the camp in writing before you count on either.
How you book
The Mara Triangle administration does not book lodges. Contact the camp directly and fix dates, room type and fees for your travel period.
Timing and rules on the drive
Plan your days around the gate hours. The Mara Triangle gates open from 06:00 to 19:00, with no entry after 18:30, while the day ticket covers 06:00 to 18:00. Other areas follow their own rules.
Game drives follow tracks, and closed tracks are marked with stones or logs. Speed limits in the Triangle are 50 km/h on main roads and 30 km/h on other tracks. Animals have priority. If many vehicles wait at a sighting, the Triangle limits viewing to 10 minutes once more than five vehicles are waiting.
No safari can promise a particular animal. Big cats, elephants and herds are present in the Mara, but a sighting depends on the day. A longer stay gives you more drives, not a guarantee. Read the page on wildlife for what to expect.
If you want to add a beach after the bush, combining a safari with the coast has its own guide. To compare trip prices, see what a safari costs.
Where the camp sits shapes the safari
Three kinds of location, each with its own fees and access.
In the eastern reserve
Some camps lie inside the national reserve on the eastern side, close to the Sekenani Gate. You pay reserve entry for the days you drive there.
In the Mara Triangle
The western part has its own gates, its own payment system and its own park rules. Camps inside it send you to the Purungat Bridge or Oloololo Gate to pay.
In a conservancy
Conservancy camps stand on private community land next to the reserve. They charge a nightly fee, and a drive into the reserve adds reserve entry. Where to stay โ
Maasai Mara safaris: frequently asked questions
Is a fly-in safari better than going by road?
It depends on your time and budget. A flight is shorter than the road transfer, but it adds the airfare, a baggage limit of 15 kg and a transfer from the airstrip. Compare both on the flights page and the Nairobi page.
What is included in a fly-in package?
One airline describes its packages as domestic flights, full board, transfers between airstrip and camp and at least 2 game drives a day. That is the model of one operator, so check the list in your own quote.
Is the park fee included in the price?
Often not. The camp rate sheets show park fees and community fees as extras. Ask your operator for the number of park days and the fee per person.
How many days do I need?
There is no fixed minimum, and no number of days guarantees a sighting. More drives raise your chances without making them certain. Plan the nights around the transfers as well.
Can I walk or drive at night?
Do not assume so. Night drives and guided walks are offered at some conservancy camps and not as a general right in the national reserve. Ask the camp in writing for the area and the rules.
Can I book a lodge through this site?
No. This is an independent guide. Contact the camp or an operator of your choice, and fix the dates and fees in writing.
